Wow what beautiful weather to start our Fraser Island trip! Not a cloud in the sky as we piled into the 4WD and set off to the ferry to the island across the 'grey nurse' shark infested waters! The sea around the island is a specific breeding ground for the protected endangered sharks...definitely no swimming in the sea! Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world stretching 75 miles.
We arrived on the island and started to head along the exceedingly bumpy off road tracks (no roads on the island) we stopped for a rainforest lunch and then a sandwich lunch, all prepared for us by Kris- our proper Australian 'bloke' very amusing..if a tad pervy! After lunch we drove on to lake Birrabeen, an absolutely gorgeous fresh water lake, crystal clear water and the finest white sand - 92% silica! Our first time on the trip we have been able to swim properly without swimmer suits or risk from sharks or crocs! We got very over excited that we could open our eyes underwater without hurting them..emms also decided to drink it..tasted like mineral water aparrently! Haha. We sunbathed until the sun was gone and then headed to camp to set up our tents and prepare supper. We had delicious steak, our best meal yet after constant pasta!
As the darkness fell on camp the drinking games started...we got the group (14 people..half of which were German!) to play ring of fire! Very amusing, sitting in the rainforest, in the middle of nowhere drinking goon! Goon is like white wine..but its derived from fish eggs...ew!! A drunk Emms and Vicki decided to take the walk to the toilets down a long dark track. Lets just say, lots of screaming! I heard them sprinting back to the camp wondering what on earth they had come across. Turns out a huge python was sprawled across the track and they'd nearly landed on it (luckily not one of the venomous snakes) So we all headed back down the track with our guide and stroked it!
Into our tents rather late, vicki and emms next door to me and kimberly (a lovely girl we met on our Oz bus and who happened to be on the same Fraser tour as us!)
