So yesterday we had to get up at 5.15am to catch our Oz experience bus down the coast to Townsville! On the way down we passed through the 2 wettest places in Oz (yes it was raining) and saw the golden gumboot and the giant golden gumboot in Tulley as the auzzies like 'big things' to show what there town is famous for! We also passed through the areas worst hit by cyclone yasi. The damage was worst in Camberwell where houses where missing their roof and most of the trees had been snapped completely in half. We also stopped off at the Bininda boulders on the way. 6 hours later we arrived in Townsville and caught the ferry over to Magnetic Island where we are now! We saw the 'big' spider in townsville..horrible!! The sun has been shining on us today which was wonderful after a few days of rain in tropical Cairns! We sunbathed this morning and then did the Forts walk this afternoon on which you are supposed to spot koalas in their natural environment. We saw two gorgeous koalas snoozing in the trees and got some great photos! Also saw a wild kookaburra and some other interesting birds! Had to watch out for the 'deadly adder' which likes the sandy conditions of the walk! Returned to our hostel for postcard writing and supper. Later this evening there is toad racing at the hostel which we are very excited to see! Moving down the coast again tomorrow to Airlie beach where we will pick up a boat and make our way around the famous Whistunday Islands, hoping for more fabulous weather! Missing everyone at home but excited to keep seeing and doing new things! x
