Got an early start from Budapest on the new highway and crossed the border from Hungary into Austria. The ride was fairly uneventful and fast due to the fact I only was spending one night there and I wanted to see as much as possible. I got to the bin dipper hotel (Budget Ibis) and unpacked. Perhaps I am being unfair because the rooms were quite nice. Simple and clean, which is all I was asking for....still "Ibis" is the worst name for a company. I then headed into town on the bike and the first stop was the Schonbrunn palace. These guys were not short o a quid. From the main road the place does not look overly impressive. It is not until you grasp the scale of what you are looking at, that it all comes to life. Those little things out the front are horse drawn carts and the doors and windows are massive. Of course the decoration is very fancy. Baroque with a hint of East Asian thrown in. When you get through the palace you get to the back yard. The whole area is full of tree lined walkways, fountains, water features, sculpted trees, gazebos and everything else a palace needs to keep up appearances. Everything on a decadent scale. Impressed with what I had seen I got back on the bike and headed toward the middle of Vienna. It reminded me a little of Paris with the range and styles of buildings. Only not as big. There are so many places to see there that I was unsure where to start. So I just walked around for 5 hours trying to get lost. By the end of the day I was beat and had a massive sensory overload. So I jumped on the bike and headed toward the hotel. This is when the fun started. The rollmops that I had for lunch may have spent a little long on the counter before I ate them and the wanted out. On a motorcycle is not the best place to be so I picked up the pace and waded through the traffic. In my haste to get out and explore, I forgot to put fuel in the bike! It spluttered to a halt in the middle of traffic and a had to push it to the side of the road to turn the reserve tank on and try to get it going again. All precious seconds. Anyhow, I made it to the hotel in the nick of time. Dinner was a non event and I had a couple of beers from the vending machine in the lobby and called it quits for the night. Vienna is a great city and I don't think I did it justice by only spending a night there. If I ever return I will spend longer there.
