What a pretty city ! Following breakfast, began our day with a tour of Bordeaux. Our guide Lucile, took us on the bus to the east side of the river, past the wine museum, and over the four column bridge, that raises up like an elevator to let boats through, to see a gorgeous view of the city. On the way she explained how people here don’t talk about liking kinds of wine, but rather they like east bank or west bank wines, as the soil from each side of the river is quite different, and produces different tasting wines. Fascinating .
From this side of the river, Lucile pointed out all the sights we would see when we returned to do the walking portion of the tour. Pointed out the Point Pierre Bridge, Burgundy Gate, Cathedral, Royal Place, and a large square, among others.
Back on the bus, and over the bridge back to the historic center, where we stopped, and continued on foot. Following a comfort stop, were treated by Aldo( who has given us delicious, almost daily sweet treats from the region we are in) canele, a delicious soft pastel with a caramelized outer crust . Yummy...don’t know which is better, the macaroon from Saint-Émilion, or this. Apparently the two cities are on competition for the best.
Continued on our walking tour into one of the main squares and through the main shopping street, and to some side streets, and out to the palace. Lucile pointed out the pretty medallions on some of the buildings. Bordeaux was rebuilt by one architect in the 18th century. The buildings were made in a similar style with the limestone from Saint-Émilion. These buildings must be cleaned to keep their appearance, and fines are leveled if they are not cleaned.
On to the palace and beautiful square, and across the street to the Water Mirror. This large shallow pool, gives a beautiful reflection of the palace square. Lovely.
On to some other small square, and back to the main square, where our tour ended, and we were free for the afternoon. Separated for a little retail therapy, before reuniting for lunch . Meet Michelle and Greg and decided to return to try Chez Jean , recommended by Lucile for lunch. Sat outside and had a lovely lunch, with a guitarist in the square. Saw Linda and John as well, and the six of us walked back to the hotel .
Following a short break , meet with the two couples for champagne provided by Linda and John, before our trip to the countryside for our wine tour and dinner.
Back to the bus for the ride to the Bordeaux countryside, and to a chateau vineyard, where the wine is produced by women. Made a quick stop to take in the small town of Cadillac. This walled town with its ramparts is another charming small medieval town.
Finally got to Château de Payre. What a lovely spot! Toured the grounds, then out to the vineyards, into the room with large tanks of wine, to the barrel room, and finally to a tasting and lovely dinner complete with all their wines! Fantastic.
Back to the city of Bordeaux, and to bed, as tomorrow is another long day. Off to Cognac and eventually the Loire Valley.
