Unfortunately it was time for us to leave this beautiful part of France. Started this morning with a drive along the coast, and through Cannes, sight of the famous film festival, and also a beautiful city!
Drove to the lovely walled town of Avignon. Avignon was once home to the Popes, and in fact, there is a large papal palace on one of the squares. After a brief orientation of the town with Aldo, we continued on our own. Hoped to find a crepe place for lunch, but some how got misguided . In an effort to return, we stumbled upon a park with fantastic views, and were able to walk on the wall for awhile. Spectacular !
Got back to one of the squares, and had a delicious lunch with wine, and time for a little shopping, and it was time to be off again.
Next stop was the aqua duct built by the Romans at Pont du Gard. This engineering marvel was built thousands of years ago to bring water to the towns, and is a UNESCO sight, as was the old town of Avignon .
Back on the bus for the ride to Carcassonne. Enjoyed another fabulous dinner with the group which included a local dessert of poached pears in wine with sorbet and a local type of cookie. Yummy, as was the whole meal served with some local delicious wine.
Edo recommended we take an evening stroll to the castle walled village, and were sure glad we did. The village was practically deserted, but light up like a fairy tale. How magical!
Made our way back for bed, as we both seemed to have picked up a cold. Tomorrow brings our tour of Old Carcassonne, then off to Lourdes.
