Left this interesting place of Lourdes, and on our way to the Bordeaux region.
Left this lovely city passing by the castle on the hill, and out to the countryside bordering the Pyrenees. These mountains form the border between France and Spain, and while tall, are shorter than the Alps.
After stopping for lunch, started our journey through the Bordeaux region. Miles and miles of beautiful vineyards and chateau populate this scenic area. Magnificent! Our first stop was in Saint-Emilion.
This well preserved medieval town( another UNESCO sight ), is home to many vineyards, and has almost 200 kilometers of underground tunnels formed in the limestone under the city. Some of these tunnels are used to store the wine.
Got to tour part of the limestone cave, and had a delicious tasting of two of their wonderful wines.
Next made our way through the cobblestone streets to a beautiful view of the valley . After this, we were left on our own to explore the lovely shops, squares, and churches that make up this charming town. Larry and I decided to walk around exploring, and found a pretty little cafe built into the rocks. Stopped for a glass of wine, and to enjoy the view. Had a nice conversation with the owner, who has a daughter in San Francisco!
All too soon, it was time to board the bus to the city of Bordeaux. This is one of France’s larger cities, and an important port.
Got settled in our hotel room, then off to our group dinner at a local restaurant. Once agaIn a lovely dinner with local wines . Yummy! Saw one of the squares lit up, but will tour and explore more tomorrow, as we are here for two nights!
