Hated to leave this charming city of Dijon, so much more to do, but off we went for the next adventure. Left the city into the wine country of Burgundy.
Miles upon miles of vineyards from the level fields, and up the hills, as far as the eye can see. Saw the sun rising over this spectacular scene. Awesome!
Continued through small towns to the first stop in the lovely town of Beaune. Made our way through part of the old town to Hotel-Dieu Beaune or Hospice de Beaune. What a treasure!
Formed by the chancellor of Burgundy in the mid 1400’s as a hospital for poor. It is a wonderful example of Burgundian architecture with its glazed tile roofs, timber galleries, and ornate rooftops. It contains beautiful artwork including tapestries, and of course the famous multiple paneled altarpiece, and beautiful murals.
The poor and sick were cared for by nuns, and functioned as a hospital until 1970’s. Over the years, the hospice has attracted grateful benefactors who have, among other things, donated vineyards, which now produce wine for them! In fact, the museum (as it is now) conducts a much anticipated wine auction every year!
Following the tour, made our way to a wine tasting and informational tour. This tasting and tour was held in and under and old church. Learned many interesting facts about wine and its production in this area (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes only, thank you!). Had some delicious tastings, of course.
Did some roaming around old town, followed by a delicious lunch with new friends, and it was off to Lyon.
Picked up our guide in Lyon, with its two rivers, the Soane and the Rhône. Our guide Amanadee gave us a bus tour with the history of Lyon . Made our way across the river, and up the windy ancient streets, that were settled by the Romans 2000 years ago. Passed an ancient tomb, and two outdoor theaters built by the Romans.
Arrive at the cathedral, which is pretty new, having been built in the early 1800’s. This church was built with donations from the people of Lyon. Before entering the church, took in the magnificent view by it. Can see all of the city of Lyon, and we lucked out since the day was so clear to see Mont Blanc in the distance. Amazing!
After the breathtaking view, how could the inside of the cathedral compete? Well it managed to... gorgeous mosaics, ceilings, statues , and pillars, with a wonderful altar make up the inside.
Returned to the bus with some more of a tour, before getting off at the old town. Amanadee continued our tour walking through the narrow streets of old town. Learned much history, Lyon was a big silk weaving area, and some is still done here today. Many houses are marked by statues to identify them, as many people could not read numbers. Years ago when the Protestant and Catholic were fighting, the Protestants would pay for each head that was knocked off the statue with a bottle of wine! Really.
Finished the tour and had a little free time before heading to our hotel. What a beautiful spot. Our room was on the 35 floor with fabulous views of Lyon.
After a quick shower, felt too tired to venture out. Split a bottle of wine, and had a lovely dinner at the hotel bar while taking in the pretty night view of Lyon.
Another busy day tomorrow. It. Is our longest travel day, by the alps and all the way to the Cote d’Azur with stops for lunch and the perfumery.
