We made it to Kampot nice and easily this afternoon... only about an hour or so's drive over, which was fine. On reflection, i think i was a bit harsh on Sihanoukville in my blog yesterday... not that it wasn't a complete sh*t-hole for chinese new year, but we clearly saw it at its lowest possible ebb and yesterday we had a nice day on a couple of nice beaches... hawaii / victory and Otres beach. the latter in particular was really nice and if anyone's eer passing, get a moto and go to Chez Antoine's... best spot in the town, by far! On top of that, dinner in the evening at Holy Cow on the main road was fab. Cheap, cheerful and lovely food. If United hadn't lost to f*cking City, it would've been a great day...
Kampot is a lovely little town on the river and gives you a better feel for small-town Cambodia. Sadly for Kampot, what you find is a bizarre mix of empty and decrepit old french-style buildings which have long since been abandoned coupled with lots of smiley, welcoming faces.., Matt Dillon filmed Ghost Town here, apparently... and it's not hard to see why. Still, glad we made the trip.
Tomorrow we enter the most outrageous phase of our journey so far... we're heading from Kmpot to the newly opened Hat Tien border crossing into Vietnam without the first clue about what we will find, where we're going, or how we're going to get anywhere from there... should be fun! I pointed out to Rach (rather annoyingly!) that in countries which are as poor as these, there's no situation we wouldn't be able to buy ourselves out of... i'm hoping we don't have to prove that theory over the next few days!!!
We've had a great time in Cambodge (i prefer the french pronunciation). The people have been lovely, great hospitality, great places and eveyone's just trying to make the best of what they can in an incredibly poor and impoverished place. We commented earlier that there aren't many old people.. we realised that many of them never made it through the '70s... very sad...
The other big news is that Rachel's hair is turning Orange.. at this stage the evidence is inconclusive, but it might be a combination of Boots Jungle Deet, her sunglasses and Nivea skin cream which is creating the effect!
Tomorrow i intend on shouting... "Good Morning, Vietnam" as soon we cross the border!!!
