So from Hoi An we booked into a morning bus to Hue. It was only a 4 hour journey so it wasn't too bad. We we arrived it was like a ghost town, everyone had finished work for New Year, and as it was New Year's Eve everyone was getting ready for the evening celebrations. We found a hotel, managed to find somewhere open for lunch and chilled out. The weather was pretty grey but it was warm. We had found out that there would be fireworks at midnight in the town along with a music concert starting at 10pm. We started the evening with a few drinks in a bar, unfortunately at this point it had started to rain. We were debating whether to brave the rain and spend New Years with the Vietnamese or whether to stay in the dry and carry on drinking with fellow backpackers. We decided to brave the rain and it was a good choice. We weren't sure where the concert or fireworks were going to be so we just decided to follow the crowd. There were millions of people, the roads were packed with moto's, it was a bit of a nightmare but everyone was in good spirits so we had a laugh along the way. We finally found where it was all happening, it was in the Citadel which is the old city where the emperor lived, it was quite medieval looking but spectacular at night. Once inside the walls we saw the stage and tents so we headed there for a bit of shelter after picking up a few cans of beer. This event was completely free, we couldn't believe it. The music started and a load of dancers ran out on stage and one by one slipped over as the floor was wet from the rain. Everyone found it very entertaining! The music was pretty awful but it was easy to get involved with a few beers inside us. Kids for some reason found us amusing and the boys were laughing at how tall Pete is.
It was coming up to midnight and we were wondering where the fireworks would be as we saw a lot of people standing by the river. So we attempted to find out where they were, Kate went up to many people including the police and first aiders but no one spoke English, Pete resorted to impersonating a firework much to Kate's amusement and they still didn't understand. We eventually found a couple that spoke English and confirmed that the fireworks would be by the stage.
The fireworks were amazing, and in true Asian style they were done to Gangnam style. Enough of this song already!!!!!
The fireworks finished and we fought our way out of the narrow tunnel, Kate getting groped in the process, and headed back over the river to our hotel. By this point we were soaked through so we headed back to our hotel to dry off.
The next day we walked around the citadel, and around the ruins. It was a pretty place but as much of it had been destroyed during the war everything that stands there now isn't that old. This took up much of our day and we were booked onto an over night bus to Hanoi at 5.
We liked Hue but as it was new year it was like a ghost town and not a lot was happening.
