We arrived in Can Tho and found a hotel recommended in the lonely planet guide. Once we had checked in we organised a boat tour for the following morning to visit the floating market, this one is the biggest in the Mekong Delta, followed by a trip to the islands and small canals. Although we were looking forward to it, it meant getting up at 5!
Can Tho is the liveliest place we have been to in the Mekong Delta. In the evening the main strip along the river is lined with stalls selling flowers for the upcoming New Year celebrations. The roads are narrow and filled with people driving moto's. It kind of looks like a drive by market, people drive along and stop at stalls to have a look. It makes walking along very difficult. We had some dinner and had an early night.
The next day we were up bright and early to catch our boat. A woman collected us from our hotel and took us down to the dock to get on her little boat. It was pitch black at this point but as we made our way closer to the market the sun started to come up, it was beautiful to see. Before we got to the market a boat pulled alongside ours selling drinks and coffee, we jumped at the coffee and it was pretty good. We are getting use to the condensed milk, even though it's sweet. We carried on along to the market, it was massive. The market was a wholesale market selling all kinds of fruit and veg. Boats would have a bamboo pole at the front of their boat which they would tie the produce they were selling to. People buying would arrive on there tiny narrow boats and pull up along side to negotiate prices. It was interesting to see. We then made our way to another floating market. On the way the woman driving our boat cut up some pineapple for us to have, now that's multitasking!
We arrived at the seconded market and this one was smaller and selling fruit and even clothes that we could buy. This was a local market. From here we then made our way through smaller canals, it was lovely and relaxing. We stopped and had a walk through a village and paddy fields and stopped off at a restaurant to have some breakfast. After breakfast our boat driver took us to have a look around the gardens where they grow pineapples, banana's, limes amongst other things. To navigate around the garden you need to cross what they call monkey bridges, called this because apparently you look like a monkey when you cross them. They are basically made of a log you walk across and a bamboo pole you hold onto so you don't fall into the water, it was amusing.
We then got back on the boat and headed back to Can Tho. We arrived back about 12.30 and we were shattered so we went back to our hotel and had a little nap.
Once we managed to tear ourselves away from our bed we headed to a hotel up the road to use the internet, and surprisingly Facebook worked so we managed to upload our photos.
We headed to a small Italian restaurant and got two pizzas, they were absolutely delicious. We then headed back to the hotel and passed out after a long day.
We didn't have anything planned for the next day other than our bus at 8PM. We took advantage of this and had a lay in before checking out. We walked round the town an bought a few essentials from the supermarket, there wasn't much else to do so we visited a few cafes, sat by the river and played eye spy and had some pancakes before getting our night bus to Da Lat.
