So the next day we joined the tour group, everyone was staring at us wondering why we had our backpacks for a days tours. We spoke to the tour guide and told her exactly where we wanted to go, unfortunately there was a little confusion as the place we wanted to go to is also the name of the province it's in. It was fine though she found a solution, we would join the tour group for the morning. This actually worked out really well. We got on a boat and crossed the river to an island, here we got to try some bee tea. It's made of honey, pollen, lemon juice and hot water, it tasted amazing! They also came around with other honey treats. Then a bit of a random one, a guy comes out with a python! Kate manned up and held the python for a bit. From here we jumped on the boat again to another island. From here we had to take our backpacks as the guide had arrange two moto's to pick us up and take us to Ben Tre, but not before trying the yummy coconut candy.
We were a bit worried about getting on the moto's with our backpacks but the drivers managed to put them between there legs. It probably wasn't the best way for Kate to ride a moto for the first time as to get out of the coconut place we had to drive along a very rickety narrow path followed by a narrow/half falling apart bridge. It didn't help that Kate was on an old bike where the back seat sits on a spring, so at first she was finding it difficult to stay on but we soon hit a road and it was fine. Don't worry mum you have to wear a helmet here by law!
After about half an hour we arrived at a hotel we had found in our book that was right on the river, we checked in and went for a wonder to find some lunch. Ben Tre is a really quiet little riverside town. There weren't any restaurants anywhere so we stopped at this little vendor that had whole cooked ducks and other pieces of cooked meat on meat hooks. The women didn't speak much English so we weren't really sure what we were getting. We pointed at the meat that looked like pork and she made us a pork, cucumber and chilli baguette. It only cost 30p each and they were pretty good although the chilies were so spicy. We chilled out for the remainder of the day.
The next day we hired some bikes and went for a bike ride around an island opposite, riding through some rural villages. It was such a nice bike ride, everyone shouting hello as we passed. After a couple of hours we headed back, returned our bikes and headed to a rooftop cafe in a hotel that we had seen across the river and had some food and drinks.
We liked Ben Tre although it was a little quiet for us.
