After a crazy minibus ride we arrived in Bangkok. We were dropped off near the Kao San Road which was on the other side of town to where we were staying. We decided to walk to the nearest skytrain station as it didn't look too far on the map. An hour and a half later we realised it was, we finally made it to the sky train and jumped on and headed to our apartment for christmas which we had booked with our friends from home, Olly and Sophie. They weren't arriving until later on so we dropped off our bags and headed out to do some shopping.
Bangkok is home to hundreds of shopping malls, some posh and some not so. We visited three that afternoon, we couldn't believe the scale of them.
We returned to our apartment to wait for Olly and Soph to arrive. The apartment was amazing, it was a four bedroom flat on the 26th floor overlooking the city. We had a huge lounge, dining room and kitchen, plus balconies and a pool and fitness centre on the 5th floor. Once the others arrived we had a good catch up over a few bottles of Leo, one of the thai beers. It was great as Olly and Soph had just flown in from India, we hadn't seen them for nearly three months so we had some catching up to do and it was great to hear all their stories about India.
We spent most of Christmas eve relaxing by the pool which no one else seemed to use. We then headed out to find some food for Christmas day. We were recommended a supermarket that is mainly used by westerners so we thought this would be a great place to find turkey, sausages and bacon. It was only a ten minute walk and when we got there we saw some lovely turkeys which were ready cooked like the chickens in Sainsbury's. They weren't massive but cost 4000 baht, over £80. We then looked at the frozen ones, a small crown was £15 but it was the cheapest we could find so we went for that. We also found sausages, bacon and stuffing. We got some carrots that weren't too expensive and then went for some parsnips, we then saw the price tag and went for one parsnip - 200baht (over £4). We decided not to bother with the brussel sprouts as a small bag was £8. We headed back to the apartment and locked our food away before heading out for some Christmas eve drinks.
We headed to the Kao San road which is famous for the bars and backpacker scene. We met with a guy we met in Koh Chang a few weeks before an had a few beers. He taught Pete some Thai which was great when he had to barter for his secret Santa present; we all separately went shopping for these at the stalls down this road. We also found a great little stall doing Pad Thai, a very authentic Thai noodle dish.
On Christmas day we headed to the pool and chilled out for most of the day. We then got the turkey in the oven and had a few drinks. We had an amazing meal with some of the best roast potatoes we have ever had. The meat was perfect as were the pigs in blankets.
Boxing day was our last full day in Bangkok so we decided to go and see some of the sights.
We headed to the Royal Palace which was rather stunning and houses the temple with the Emerald Budha. We then headed for the reclining Budha which was also rather stunning. A huge gold Budha laying down in a beautiful temple. From here we headed back to the Kao San road for a few beers.
We were sad to leave our beautiful apartment, it was complete luxury which was a nice change. Heading to Cambodia next, we've loved Thailand and can't wait to go back in a few months time!
