Pete and Kate's Asian Adventure
We waved our friends off at Koh Tao and headed to its sister island, Koh Pha Ngan. This is home to the famous full moon parties and was the reason we were going as the full moon fell on the 25th.
We knew it was going to be busy so we booked accommodation on the internet and made sure we were well away from Haad Rin, the beach where the full moon party is held. We found a nice place in the north of the island and jumped on two motorbike taxis from the pier. As we checked in the manager told us there were no more fan rooms so they had to upgrade us to a larger air-con room although they disabled it. A young lad offered to take Kate's bag, she said no but was pleased that he refused to listen . We set out from the lobby up a steep path which seemed to go on forever. Pete's legs were buckling as he had to carry his bag and by the time we got to our hut at the top we were both dripping in sweat. We were nicely surprised though as the view was amazing, we had opted for a cheap room without a view but as we had upgraded we had a seaview. The sun was just setting and the sky looked beautiful, you could even still see Koh Tao in the distance.
After a shower we headed straight back down to the hotel restaurant for dinner and then got an early night. The following day was spent on the beautiful beach a little further down the hill from our hotel. It was surprisingly quiet here and was one of the nicest beaches we have seen. That evening we headed back and got our glad rags on for the full moon part. We sat downstairs in the hotel restaurant waiting for the taxis to leave, we didn't realise they didn't go until 10.30PM so we had a bit of a wait and a pre drink. The pick up trucks were waiting outside to take everyone from the hotel, we were expecting the standard rows of seats in the back but no there weren't any so we all sat on the floor, luckily it was clean. Once we arrived we paid our entrance fee and headed to get a bucket. We were expecting to pay a lot for drinks but a bucket of Sangsom (Thai Whiskey), Red Bull and Sprite was only 200baht, and they put a whole bottle of the whiskey in. We ended up sticking with an Australian guy and his Thai Lady "friend" that was not his girlfriend although he didn't like her talking to anyone else and got rather protective. Luckily we lost them and enjoyed the party. It was pretty crazy, there were huge stages and dance floors built on the beach, each bar was playing a different types of music, there were lots of very drunk people running round covered in UV paint and everyone was having fun. After two buckets we were both rather drunk, at about 4.30AM we found a taxi and headed back to the hotel. Luckily this pick up did have seats in the back and we had a good laugh with the Danish lads about Danish bacon, the Germans about sausages and the Thai's about the words we knew.
The following day we had a long lay in and then headed down to the restaurant for some lunch, a nice big cheese burger helped with the hangover before we headed down the beach for an hour of sun. It was a shame to spend our last full day in Thailand in bed but the party was great fun and well worth it.
