From Nong Khai we caught a bus to Udon Thani to catch another bus to Phitsanulok. Once we arrived took a tuk tuk to a cheap hotel we found in our book. At first the rooms didn't seem as cheap as they were described. You cannot haggle at hotels in Thailand like you can in India. We politely asked if he had any cheaper rooms and he showed us the information for the singles rooms. It said "maximum of 2 people" so we thought we would try it out; it was only 250 baht, around £5. The room was ok and the bed was bigger than a standard single, there was even a TV and we had our own bathroom!
We decided to stay in Phitsanulok instead of Sukhothai as it meant less traveling and had better onward connections.
Surprisingly Pete was starving when we arrived so we went out to find some food. We walked round a food market but nothing really looked to tasty; there were lots of pigs ears and chicken feet. Phitsanulock is fair sized city but there's not much there. we walked along the river an found a little restaurant where Pete ordered his favourite dish so far, chicken and cashew nuts.
The next day we took a trip to Sukhothai, about an hour away by bus. We managed to get on a VIP minibus which had a TV showing something like the Thai Top of the Pops. Once we arrived we hired some bikes and cycled round the ancient city ruins. It was a spectacular place, as you Cycle round you can stop off and explore the ruins. Most of the old Wats (temples) had collapsed but all the Budhas were intact. These sat in the historical park and were surrounded by lakes, grass and trees.
We then headed back and went to a little out door restaurant we had seen the night before. Surprisingly the menu was full of western food; Pete had a chicken steak and chip and Kate had fish and chips. All for £2.50.
