We were happy to be leaving behind Wheeler's guesthouse and moving on to a town south of KL called Melaka. Melaka is a world heritage site, there are many old Dutch influenced buildings along with the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia. We loved the feel of the place straight away. We thankfully found a cheap hostel which was a massive improvement from our previous room in KL.
We arrived on a Saturday and we were told that every weekend Jonker Street (the main road through china town) became pedestrianised and a night market was held. So we made our way down, at the end of the road there was a crowd building up and some man's voice playing over the speaker, so we stood around a bit to find out what was happening. It turned out that it was a man who held the Guinness world record for the number of coconuts he can pearce his finger in a set time, we had to see this! We had to hang around for ages to see it. The guy had to do his warm up exercises which were funny to see and then did a show of his wonky index finger. He then also went round trying to sell some Chinese medicine, the guy was completely full of himself - known worldwide....apparently! Anyway an hour or so later we watched him smash his index finger into a coconut, the show continued but we had had enough so we made a sharp exit. We had some food and went for a few drinks with some people we met at our hostel. A few turned into quite a few and we ended up sitting outside this random bar that looked like someone's living room with the front open playing cards in the street.
The next day was Election Day in Malaysia, the current government have been in power for 56 years and this year was the first where there was a possibility of another party coming in. So it was a big day and most things were closed. But we had a lovely day walking round the town admiring the old buildings.
In the evening we wanted to find a restaurant we had read about, it was quite a way but we weren't particularly hungry before we set off but hoped we would be by the time we got there. In true Tripadvisor style the map was incorrect and we ended up in a gated community. We had a look at another map and found that there were two streets with the same name.
Unfortunately the other road was near our hostel so it meant walking all the way back just to find out that it was closed! Obviously by this time a few hours had passed and we noticed everything was now shut, the only place open was the random Hard Rock Cafe in town. It's really not a tourist ridden place and couldn't believe there was one here. Anyway we stuffed our bellies and headed to bed for an early start the next day.
