Our bus to Kuala Lumpur was very comfortable, instead of having rows of four seats there were only three and the seats were huge like armchairs. We walked from the bus stop into China Town taking note of where Nandos and McDonalds were on the way. First impressions of KL was great but then again this was Chinatown. We found a guesthouse recommended by Lonely Planet, saw the building and hesitated but thought its been recommended, looks must be deceiving. We made our way up the stairs to the reception. The stairway was similar to an old east end council block, as we reached the floor with the hostel on there were small tables and parasols set up on the landing. As we entered the "reception" we saw a big fish tank with turtles in and lots of cages housing overweight hamsters. We had a look at the room which was pretty much a cell with the window leading to the hallway, but we took it anyway as it was cheap. The man explained the main selling point, two fans, one extractor fan blowing air into the room and another free standing fan. We later found out that the first one is to blow the disgusting smell into the room and the second one then blows it around inside.
We wandered round China Town but didn't fancy any of the food on display so we headed to Nando's and had a pint in the rasta bar.
The main reason we picked the hostel was because of the home made muesli and fruit which was described in the book as delicious. By the look of the place we decided against it but couldn't find anywhere else so headed to McDonalds the following morning.
We got the train into the city and had a look at the Petronas Towers and the other huge towers. We ummed and arghed as to get tickets to visit the top of the towers as they were a bit pricey, but after a while we gave in and bought two tickets for the following day at sun set. That afternoon we continued to wander round taking the odd brake for a fruit shake to cool us down. We headed to a recommended Indian restaurant for dinner which was very tasty and very authentic.
Kate did some research and found a great place for breakfast and they did do great Muesli and coffee. From here we took a walk down to the botanical gardens. Here they have a huge avery which was a bit expensive but the orchid garden was free so we popped in, it was filled with beautiful flowers. We then wandered through the huge park and made our way back up to the city to go up the towers. We showed our tickets and headed through the airport style security. After a safety briefing we got in the lift and headed up to the sky bridge on the 42nd floor before getting back in the lift and heading up to the 81st floor. Unfortunately we couldn't see the sun set as there was a huge thunder storm but it was amazing and felt like we were in the middle of it. At the top they had a small exhibition with a couple of big models which excited Pete although he did have a couple of comments about their quality. Even though it poured we still had a great view and we were both pleased we splashed out to go up there.
The next morning after visiting our favourite museli shop we headed to the bus station for the next leg of our trip.
