7 days and 2000 km later and we are in Cairns. Hired a small car and travelled through Maryborough, Hervey Bay , Town of 1770 and Rockhampton, Mackay (for anyone who has been). First few nights were a bit worrying as everywhere we stopped, as per Lonely Planet Guide book was deserted. It is the wet season. 1770 has a chip shop open and when that shut at 8:30pm it was game over. Luckily things got a lot better at Airlie Beach which was a party town. All Australians though, hardly any tourists. Visited Hamilton Island where I saw my first live wild wallabies. Makes a change from Roadkill. Townsville was next and also a good night scene. We saw the "Air Guitar World Chamionships" which was really funny - basically just pissed people and $20 prize. Better than that was the wet T-Shirt competition (minus the T-Shirts). Sorry cannot provide any footage. Not a bad Sunday night.
As we have travelled north it has got ridiculously hot. Thankfully it can get quite cloudy and there is usually a breeze. but if not it is sweltering. The cost road we were on is about 10km inland so you have to detour to see beaches but there is no swimming anyway apart from designated netted off areas due to jellyfish/sharks etc. Normally we are flanked by sugar cane and banana plantations. Cairns seems like a good place but weird as we have seen nothing but white people since arriving in Oz and on arrival here suddenly there are loads of Aboriginies and Japanese.
