We had a good nights sleep, with the boat rocking in a moderate swell for most of the night. It was 6.15am and were arriving in Hemmerfest a town of 10,000 claiming to be the first town in Europe to have street lighting - 1891! It was very cold and windy. There was a complete deck covering of snow from overnight and it was snowing heavily. The ship was only here for 1/2 hour, but we still decided to take a walk ashore - a least 10-15 cm of fresh snow everywhere. Saw a sign for "The ancient society of polar bears" - but it was closed! Back on the ship and we were on our way again. Aaron and I decided to stay out on deck to see the scenery - very beautiful coastal areas, heavy snow still falling the sun starting to come through - temperature mild at about 0 degrees - but with the wind (feels like) minus 10!
We joined everyone for the breakfast rush. Plenty to eat in a nice dining room overlooking the ocean rolling by with a moderate swell and the boat rocking significantly.
Out on deck again to brave the elements. Passed by a large wind farm perched high on a snow capped mountain and also passed one of the sister ships on its journey south with a blast of the ship's horn to greet each other.
Arrived at Masoy a far flung community in a very picturesque sound, surrounded by beautiful mountains. The sun is shining brightly- hopefully we will see a little more as our next stop is Hommisvarg where we will stop for 3 hours. We are going on a tour to Nor Cap - the most northerly point in Europe.
To be continued....
