It is now 5 o'clock in the morning and I have been awake for a while so why not have an entry to tell you about the night.
We called in at Kjollefjord at 5.30pm - a deep sea red king crab fishing port. The boat was still rocking in the heavy swell so it was good to get to the relative shelter of the port. A crab fisherman came on with live specimens, and as it turned out specimens to be eaten later on. The one I am holding is a 5 kilogram "feast". The female can lay 700,000 eggs! The Norwegians are allowed to fish for 400,000 kg (presumably each boat), and the fisherman said the Russians can take 4 million kilos - it's political he said?
Our dinner sitting was at 8pm and tonight it was a seafood buffet - and reindeer, as well as other cold meats and lovely desserts. Yes; the king crabs were there too. Huge leg pieces with succulent meat. A selection of desserts of which Aaron and I chose the Viennetta ice-cream.
Just as we were walking from the dining room deciding to have an early night an announcement was made that the Northern Lights were visible from the forward part of the ship. Extreme care was advised due to the heavy swell, the rocking of the boat and the icy deck. Well you would have thought it was a signal for "abandon ship". Passengers were scurrying everywhere making for the best spot. Of course we joined them.
The seas were rough, the decks were icy -but there they were, dazzling in a large break between clouds. Not the greens and yellows, but whites and light blues filtering between the clouds and appearing to come in streaks across the sky - a wonderful aurora of light! The show went on for about 15 minutes then the clouds came back. It was a great experience.
We went to our cabin contented that the lights had made an appearance for us.
It was a very rough night with the ship pitching in what seemed occasionally to be in four directions at once? It has calmed down a little now as I sit on my bunk at 5.30am I may go outside and test the elements!
Breakfast is at 7.30am,our next and final port of call where we leave the voyage is Kirkenes. We are taking a tour to the Russian border before staying in Kirkenes overnight.
To be continued .....
