Monday 12th May - Richards birthdayBefore we went diving we told Richard to choose what he would like to do on his birthday. He choose to take a trip to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures! We headed approximately 40km north on the Cook Highway, arriving around 10.15 am.First we were booked onto the 10.30 boat ride, where we were taken around the lagoon and a couple of Crocs were fed chickens from a pole so we could see them propel themselves from the water. We then got to hear the crocodile talk about both saltie and freshwater crocs, we saw the snake talk and also had a tour of the crocodile farm where they breed crocs for their skins.A decent belt costs around £100+ and a handbag averages around £600-800 (don't think we'll be bringing any of those home). We learnt quite a bit and I discovered that this was the same place I had visited in 1989, but it had expanded and moved a few hundred metres down the road from the original.Tuesday 13th - drove up to Port Douglas and had a look around, on the way back we stopped at Ellis Beach and the boys set up their rods, it was fairly windy so the sea was fairly rough. We had been there a fair while without much action (is there ever much action????), then the boys started noticing their bait was getting lumps taken out of it, Rich lost a couple of hooks etc. Then a big smile came across his face his first bite - what a surprise when he reeled in a hammer head shark, just a baby but a hammer head all the same.Rob helped him unhook, then told the shark which direction to swim in to find his bait - but of course he swam off the opposite way!Shortly afterwards Rich caught another one, he was well happy. On this occasion Rob was unlucky - they are heading off on a river trip next, Rob is after barramundi lets hope he is successful then.
14th May - Boys were booked onto a fishing boat trip taking them to the Cairns river estuary. They saw a couple of saltie crocs in their natural environment, fishing was a bit hit and miss but Rob caught a 'Blubber Lips' ugly looking thing I must say.No barramundi were to be seen, so that one will have to wait until another day.We had to call into the supermarket to get dinner, as we didn't have any fish to cook!Later we called in at the Cairns Night Market, there are lots of stalls selling the usual souvenirs and trinkets, plus crocodile leather goods, cosmetics and potions made from local ingredients and lots of quick massage places - I mean the muscular kind (just in case you were wandering!).
