Today was spent getting to know the congregation of Oleus Petri Lutheran Congregation in Obera. We went to a service at their borrowed church, where I gave a short Bible reading and Amy helped with communion. Ellie and Luke went with the other kids to their Sunday school. After the service we stuck around and talked with some of their parishioners. About 4 years they were kicked out of their church after the church council (who ran things like a dictatorship) fired the popular pastor. Rather than just take it, the majority of the parishioners disagreed with the move and pushed back against the council. The council responded by locking the church doors and forcing the parishioners for a while to hold services in the street in front of the church. They have since been sharing a church with another Lutheran congregation ever since. For lunch we were invited to a BBQ with the congregation at a local retired teachers hall. It was amazing (see the photos in the album). It was the best BBQ I have ever had. Think Fogo De Chao in a retired teachers hall. They even treated us to a short tango show. After thoroughly stuffing ourselves we walked over to the Parque de la Naciones. Obera is full of descendants of immigrants. To celebrate heir heritage they created a Nations park that has houses dedicated to various immigrant groups. Every September they have a festival of nations that draws over 50,000 people to the park. The houses are rented out for different events during the rest of the year. Because Oleus Petri has a Swedish background we had access to the Nordic house. We were treated to coffee and waffles with ducle du leche. Many thanks to the wonderful people of Oleus Petri, they are wonderful hosts. After all the food we ate today, we are having a light meal tonight.

Colleen Simmons What an amazing experience. This sounds so immersive, personal and fun--to be with/among folks who welcome you like family. So cool.
