Exploring the known and unknown
Day 116
Further east is the town of Arromanches. After the D-day landing thousands of tons of equipment needed to be brought ashore but as there was no proper harbour close by, another solution needed to be found.
Because the severe difference between high and low tides getting large ships closed to shore presented a problem so a floating harbour was built and floated across the channel. Pontoons were placed in position after which floating ramps were connected to the shore. Today part of the pontoons are still there and visible especially at low tide. The harbour has the code name "Mulberry Harbour"
The local war museum has a large model of this all but due to the congestion we gave that a miss and visited the 360 degree movie theater instead. The stand up theater showed various scenes filmed during the landings in a 360 degree view which was a bit hard to follow as you can only view one section at the time unless you turned around continuously possibly making you dizzy in the end.
