Living The Dream
I arrived here in Villa La Angostura to find a very quaint little town full of wooden chalet type houses. Its quiet at this time of year becuase its halfway between summer and winter. Having said that, it is the best time of year to visit because the sun lights up the colourful mountains without being so hot that you can't breathe!
Whilst waiting for the bus here I checked my finances to discover that they are running perilously low! Its quite annoying that they decided to run low at the most southerly point of my journey because it means that there is no way to cut short the trip! I will shortly be setting up a charity in the name of my travels so any interested investors should visit the message board to offer their interest!
Anyway, I decided that I should use my tent to save money. Bags in hand, I walked about half a mile up the side of a dusty highway until I came to a campsite. I paid the owner 13 pesos for cash and set up the Eurohike! At this point I thought of Mark (Do you remember when we did the trial run earlier this year?) Having set the tent, I walked back down the highway into town. Once again, barking dogs roam the streets lead free!
That evening I sat at a restaurant before heading back to test out the new sleeping arrangement. I spent most of the night waking up every hour or so to put more clothes on because the temperature drops really low at night here. It was most uncomfortable and I was only saving the equivalent of 2 pounds on a hostel! I didn't bring a roll mat with me so I was sleeping on the ground. Naturally, all of the local dogs spent the whole night wailing at each other too! My policy would be to torture and kill all dogs that are not on a lead. Puto Perros!
Today I was supposed to be going on a six hour hike but all my good intentions were ruined because I woke up at 2.30pm! I had a shower, packed my tent and ambled back down the highway to buy a ticket to San Martin de los Andes which is where I am heading tonight.
After buying my ticket I went to eat brunch in a local bar. Luckily I was just in time to watch Independiente vs Boca Juniors. Boca won 2-0 which means that they are the Argentine Clausura champions for 2006. After the game, a parade of cars cruised around the streets with their occupants hanging out of the windows, tooting horns and flying the blue and yellow flag of La Boca. The atmosphere was great considering that only 10,000 people live in the town! Today was also the day that Thierry Henry cemented his loyalties to N5 with his hattrick.
Next up, San Martin de los Andes.
