Living The Dream
Cordoba, also known as 'La Docta' due to its large medical student population, is the heart of Argentina. Its also the largest city outside Buenos Aires. This is where Ernesto Guevara studied for his medical degree and where he first met Alberto Granado. This is the chap that he went around South America with.
Whilst in Buenos Aires, I met an Argentine girl called Didi. She is from Cordoba and is studying Economics at the University of Cordoba. Once I had arrived she took it upon herself to guide me around the city and ensure that I had the best time possible! It was a pleasure to have such a friendly local girl doing all the hard work for me. It helped that we both seemed to fancy each other too!
Cordoba is a good city but it does have its frustrations. For example, the downtown is very overcrowded which made me feel like I was in London. Once you get used to the fast pace of the city it does have an appeal.
Despite the fact that the uni tax-dodgers were on vacation, it was still very pleasant to walk around, take in the colonial buildings and relax in the plaza. The best part of Cordoba is called Nueva Cordoba. Here is where all the students hang out when lectures are on. Didi took me to a few classy restaurants here including one that is the best restaurant I have ever been to. A place called Karma Blue which had the best food, the best service and a three course meal for two came to about 6 pounds each. On what was supposed to be my last night in the city I managed to run out of money which meant that I couldn't pay for the meal which I had just eaten. The waiter told us not to worry and that we could just drop by with the cash the next day! That would never happen in England! The next day I made a quick phone call to the Bank of Mum and Dad before heading back to the restaurant to pay the bill!
At the weekend, Didi took me to a couple of quaint towns in the sierras which surround the city centre. On Saturday she took me to Alta Gracia which is where Che Guevara grew up. We visited his house which is now a museum.
On the Sunday, we went to a German village called Villa General Belgrano. There was a chocolate festival in the town hall which was nice! I felt like I was in Germany as the Germans have moved in and made this place similar to what they are used to back home. Apparently this place was lively after Germany beat Argentina is the world cup quater final!
Fidel Castro (Cuba), Evo Morales (Bolivia) and Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) are due in town for a summit later this week so I have been asked to leave the town. Apparently there is not room in this city for any more than three high profile superstars!
I am now going to Salta which is in the north of Argentina.
