So after our 5 day stop in Auckland, and a recommendation of where to go looking for work we head off to a small town on the west coast of New Zealand called Raglan. With what will be our trusty Bongo?! We head off onto the New Zealand open road. With 3 hours on the road under our belt we arrive in Raglan. Apparently we were told that this was a 5 hour drive, so either the bongo goes like the clappers or somebody was lying? Know which one I believe......... Arriving in Raglan at 10pm in the dark is a bit like rolling into a ghost town, in that the pub is shut and there is nobody around. Suddenly we find ourselves thinking what have we done here. But we're here now and don't really want to drive anywhere else. Mainly because to get to Raglan it's an hours drive from Hamilton which is the largest city in New Zealand that's not on the coast. Wow what an exciting fact that one is, everybody say oooh. So we roll up to the campsite which kindly let us in after hours and settle in for our first night in the bongo.
Next day everything looked a lot better, it was sunny not dark, plus everything was open. So everyone was winning all round. Raglan is 1 and a half main roads the bigger of the two roads is about 500m long and the other road is about 200m long. Next stop on the road...........WORK.........It's been a while, for us. First stop the pub, no joy there so we gave up for the day and went and checked out the surf beaches much more constructive!!!!!
So today we went hard out job hunting, we hit all 4 cafes and the pub again. As always it was the last call of the day that proved the best - they basically hired us on the spot. So all good on the job front. Next problem we have, to leave the campsite in 2 days. So we have a job but nowhere to live, but we do have a van we can live in!!!! It has all the mod cons - any view you want, central locking plus a sunroof so effectively we have an outside deck!!!! Bonus! Unfortunately Hayley isn't so keen on this idea? Don't know why, to me it's the perfect house. So we go back to our new boss and explain our dilemma. The end result is that if we have no house, we have no job. Huh.....
As always the best options comes from the most unexpected of places. After Hayley had done her first day's work (and potentially her last) the head chef says we can rent her granny flat off her. Great so everything falls into place nicely. All that is left for Raglan is for us to learn how to surf and enjoy the New Zealand summer...........
