India and Nepal 2022
This afternoon's first visit was to old Patan - a city built in the 3rd century and the narrow bumpy roads with little shops is not really a place for the modern world of motor bikes and cars. The smog, dust and pollution today is appalling and many Nepalis are taking to wearing facemasks, especially the traffic police. I saw Durbar Square which is similar to that in central Kathmandu and enjoyed sitting for a while to take in the ancient city which was has thrived here for centuries. The final place on the itinerary has been Swyambunath temple situated on top of a hill providing fantastic panoramic views of the valley below where over 4 million live. It is a holy place for Buddhists and Hindus alike and there is complete harmony between two of the world great faiths. I also caught a sight of the magnificent snow capped Himalayan peaks in the Langtang region of Nepal where I trekked in 1999.
