India and Nepal 2022
I have divided today's blog into a morning and afternoon section to do it justice - It's been an amazing day. The first place to visit with Rup, my guide, was to Boudhanath which is a huge complex with a giant stupa as its central feature. It is holy place for both Buddhists and Hindus and is very colourful with prayer flags blowing in the breeze. The next place was quite a culture shock. Pashupati has been cremating people for over two millennia on this site where the ashes from the corpses flow into the river and ultimately join the holy River Ganges. To see a clearly recognisable human body being burned right underneath where I stood took me aback initially. At a different point along the funeral ghats, it was upsetting to see distressed wailing relatives paying their last respects to the recently deceased. It is all considered to be a natural part of the circle of life as the soul continues its journey and the body is returned from whence it came to the earth, water, sky or wind. On a lighter note, I met up three sadhus who wander across India and Nepal from holy site to holy site. My guide explained that they have a balanced lifestyle here of yoga and marijuana!
