October 17th 2006-Ok, so we got to the Cameron Highlands after a very winding journey, uphill, on a very rickety clapped out coach!!! The highlands are found 1500m above sea level so it was alot cooler than we've been used to-about 16degrees! It was nice to put a jumper on!!!!!! The Highlands reminded me of a ski resort in the summer, a european place rather than somewhere in Malaysia!
We checked into a rather odd place, called 'HillView Lodge" which was quite confusing as the only view we had from our balcony was an old derelict building!!! This guesthouse was a bit rundown, with a lot of building work taking place but me and ben were the luckiest, once again we had the double room which tend to be a bit nicer than the twin rooms and so everyone was a bit jealous as they seemed to have damp prison cells. We still slept in our sleeping bags as the sheets felt damp, and our shower wouldnt turn off so we drifted off to sleep to the sound of running water!!!!
We only had half a day in the highlands before setting off at lunch time for Kuala Lumpur so we decided to go on an organised minivan tour of all the local plantations and farms. First stop- the butterfly farm, which was quite amazing, ben got to have them stuck all over him and he held a scorpion too (which im sure i'll never hear the end of!!) Next stop, and our favourite by far- the tea plantation!!!! This was amazing, tea everywhere, the photos are fab!! We saw how the tea is picked and how it is fermented and made. We then finished up by drinking pots of tea and eating shortbread!!! We also visited the rose garden which was abit boring, but Ben really enjoyed smelling the roses!!! (hehe) The strawberry farm was a bit boring but the strawbeery milkshake definately made up for it.
And so after a morning of photos and scorpions and lots of eating and drinking, we left for Kuala Lumpur-down the winding roads, which was a bit hair raising. The Cameron Highlands were well worth the visit, even if the guesthouse was a bit poor- the views were great and it was nice to be able to walk around and not have sweat pouring from you!!!!! Photos will be here soon.
