the planes seem never to stop arriving and departing from YYC-Calgary International Airport. Often it is possible to see either two aircraft on landing approach side by side on parallel runways.
They appear usually from the North and depart to the South in both cases they appear and isappear over the horizon quickly.
To the North of Calgary lies two communities they being Balzac and Airdrie.
The road North is Deerfoot and into Hwy 2, approaching Balzac on the left is a mega Mall called Cross Irons Mill covering 1.1mSq Foot or 110,000sq M of shopping space making it the largest single level shopping space in Alberta. It was completed in August 2009 and is always well patronised.
Located "över the paddock" and just opening is the 2nd largest multi storey shopping Mall in Canada called New Horizon's Mall, second only to West Edmonton Mall that I have written about earlier.
This three story complex has just over 500 retail spaces and covers 320,000sq ft of shopping space including provision for a food court and meeting rooms.
It however follows a different concept to its neighbour and most other retail shopping centres.
Each of the 500 shops are available for sale to either shop keepers or investors. The Managing Agents claim all have been sold but either that's a conservative approach or investors are already selling before the shops are occupied as my visit showed most shop fronts displaying signage For Sale/For Lease. the first business did open its doors on June 21, with the official opening to occur sometime in October 2019.
The spaces occupied numbered around ten (10) only and none of the food court shops were open instead hundreds of vacant chairs and tables with attendant rubbish bins sat vacant.
The store prices range from $190,000 to $750,000 plus yearly body corporate fees. The construction cost the developers around $200m.
Their is no plans for any major chain stores or known name brand stores so in that aspect it is unique.
Will it work? Will the investors find tenant? Will tenant cover costs? Will the customers come?
A later visit to Calgary may provide these answers.
