Well greetings again Mr Wallis and Mr Gibson, these visits seem regular now.
Well young man shake hands, Ï know what you are thinking, I read your mind as you stood by my grave last month in The Netherlands at that very late hour, you know I don't get many visitors so late at night but as you saw my grave is very short so (Chuckles) not much of me there so I'm basically a free spirit."
"It was a cracking good story you wrote about Barnes and myself but really while your facts were straight you didn't know the whole story so that's why we have joined you today in Bomber Command at Nanton in Canada on this the 75th Anniversay of the Dambusters raids."
"We were so pleased to see that you visited Bomber Command in the UK and actually got to see the Lancaster flying with the Spitfires and Hurricane escorts and yes Mr Wallis did note you took time to view his Tallboy bomb in their display."
"We also know that previously when you were in Calgary you visited their Aerospace Museum, sorry what do they call it now The Hanger Space? to see FM136 that is one of 11 still left in Canada but unlike its UK friend it is a static display item only, like the other 19 world examples and Yes I know you have been to Lincolnshire Museum to see the one there that has all engines working and does taxi runs on the runway. So it is no surprise to see you here today."
"The chaps have done a marvelous job with their $500 investment in 1960 to purchase a surplus wreck minus engines from local farmers and tow it across fields and frozen rivers to its home here at Nanton. Over the years as you know they restored the frabic and controls and now have all four engines overhauled, installed and working fully."This makes it one of only four working Lancasters in the world abit only two actually fly"
"I digress too much it's not the plane you need to know but the Canadian involvement in our epic dambusters raids that I wish to tell you about to make your story complete, chapter 6 I would suggest Mr Pearson."
"When I left the UK airspace my total complement was 133 airmen of which no less then 30 were Canadians. Its important as we stand here in Nanton today beside AJ-M their Lancaster to note that 6 of the Canadians came from this very Province of Alberta. Of my 30 airman unfortuanately 14 were killed in the raids and one became a Prisioner of war."
"As you know as Wing Commander Gibson my own craft had some Canadians as crew, if I might remember my rear gunner was Flight Sergeant George Deering a Toronto lad who survived the raid but was later killed in action on Sept 16,1943, a real asset who won the DFC."
Ëven today I find it hard to reflect on my personal Navigator P/O Harlo Taerum DFC we all called him Terry. he came from these parts Milo Alberta he did such a sterling job to get my Lancaster positioned over the targets for the actual raid. Sadly on that same later date Sept 16,1943 he was also killed in action. But what made it even harder for me was I was in Canada actually Calgary at the time on a moral boosting trip and met Terry's mother only days before and told her what a wondefl contribution her son was making only to hear he had been killed. I think Yes I have a newspaper cutting with Mrs Taerum and myself I could show your readers later perhaps."
"Great team work and those chaps were so welcome in my Flight and Blighty owes the Canadian lads a real heartfelt thanks for their Dambusters help which brings me to what I want you to see and relay to your readers today."
"Mr Wallis perhaps you would take over?"
"Certainly Guy, Well before us now is a totally unique experience, firstly yes the Lancaster but come around the front please, I must admit I too was amazed when I walked into this hangar as not since the War have I ever seen a real Lancaster carrying one of my bounching bombs and the detail I can't fault. This crew has faithfully reproduced the mounting structure, the location of my bomb, complete with working rotator and even the small but critical aim lights are in place and work as I designed the whole system. It bring tears to these old eyes to realise that people did care about my then radical ideas and have taken in so much research to be able to present this exhibit as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations. I only wish I had been here last Friday 25th August to see those Merlins again roar into life straddling my bounching bomb."
"I honestly believe this is the only Lancaster in the world that is carrying a bounching bomb, since we did the Dambusters raids, but really Guy and myself were only doing our duty to keep the world free from German agression and ideologies of the time, So let us depart again to our past homes and you go write your story so that others who are less fortunate may at least be aware of our roles and contributions along with our Canadian allies."

Laura Another exciting chapter in the story of the Dambuster Raids, the bouncing bombs, and the Lancaster aircraft that so able delivered them to the appointed distinction....the retro conversations that might have taken place......if these men who made this happen could now return to speak in our time...to fill the gapes with explanation that is our time ...can only be assumed.....
