It's weird to think that we only really have two more days in Canada before we have to come home again... Ho hum. It's certainly been a fun trip; we've seen amazing places, spoke to some lovely people, drank some awesome beers (we don't drink that much at home but hey, we're on our holidays) and walked a hell of a lot. We usually walk everywhere at home (what with not wanting to get tied down to the costs of running a car) but of course Newcastle is a lot smaller than Vancouver or Toronto.
Today we went to the Distillery District for brunch and a look around. I could have quite happily gone mental in Bergo and bought a load of brushed steel salt and pepperpots or weird spoons, but thankfully my baggage allowance and strict budget forces me to have some restraint. It's when I'm in a place like that I remember that I'm definitely my father's daughter. It was awesome though - function meets design meets shiny. One day I might have enough money to actually buy something like that without guilt... It's something to aim for, anyway.
After that we stumbled into Soma chocolate cafe and took some deep breaths of the chocolately air. Mmmmm. We decided to share a cup of Mayan hot chocolate (awesome chocolate spiced with ginger, vanilla, orange peel, chili and other spices) and it was so good. Our throats sufficiently warmed and wallets mostly unopened, we decided to move on and walk a bit more.
We ended up going towards the CN Tower again, but carried on until we got to the Steam Whistle Brewery just across the street and went on a brief tour. I thought it was pretty good value for money; $10 each for an interesting tour, a sample (or two/three/whatever) of their pilsner, and a souvenir pint glass or bottle opener. There was a small group of moronic frat boys who were all "Hurrr beer lol" but they were probably just overexcited at being allowed to drink beer by themselves. Bless.
Next to the brewery there was a railway heritage place with some whacking great steam engines, but my camera battery ran out so I couldn't take any photos. This was an event all by itself because I've never known it to run out completely. I'm glad I remembered to bring my charger now :)
