From Lake Argyle on Monday the 15th of June we headed west passing into the Northern Territory. The first thing we noticed was the speed limit went up to 130km/h and the roads became a lot worse than those we had driven on in WA. We stopped up at a camp in site called Sullivans Creek Campground in the Judbarra / Gregory National Park. Small world as our neighbours for the evening where from Beaufort and knew people we know. It was a good night sitting around chatting with other campers albeit all grey nomads. From Sullivans Creek the following day we drove into Katherine. An interesting place, a lot bigger than I thought. Again problems in the street with indigenous people are obvious. We stocked up on supplies. I walked in to the Safeway Bottle shop to buy a six pack and was immediately fronted by two police officers who asked me for photo ID. I was thinking okay whose set this up, but they were quite serious. Long story short, police man the bottle shops here. They can regulate who is buying, ascertain their details and follow up later in the evening with home visits. Apparently this has reduced domestic violence by 50%. It's largely based around the issues associated with indigenous people and alcohol. No sooner had I left the bottle shop and an aboriginal lady stole something and headed for the street. She was promptly arrested and placed on the ground. But the aboriginal onlookers started going off at the police, more units arrived and police formed a circle around the police dealing with the offender. It was nuts, and this was a Tuesday afternoon. I'm like okay kids, nothing to see here, hop in the car. From there we checked into the Big 4 caravan park for the night. Katherine would be one of the most expensive places for families to stay in caravan parks. All were $62.00 a night for a powered site. But they all had pools and with the temperature over 30 degrees we weren't going to skip out for a roadside stop. We were in two minds to either go to Katherine Gorge the next day or a place up the road people had been raving about called Edith Falls. We looked at both and felt Edith Falls had more to offer for the kids so we thought we would go there and maybe do Katherine Gorge on the way home.
