Leaving Townsville we headed north on the Bruce Highway toward Ingham. The country side began to slowly change, becoming lush, green and tropical. We pulled into the Frosty Mango at Mutarnee. Here they grow mangos and other tropical fruits. Out of those fruits they make everything. Mandy and the kids enjoyed mango ice creams and I had a manjo muffin with cream and jam, very nice!
As we got closer to Ingham the sugar cane plantations began emerging. The industry has been going in these parts since 1883. The origins and influence of Italains in the area can be seen in the design of the houses that line the road and nesstle into the sugar cane crops. The mature sugar cane is a lot taller than I imagined.
We decided to free camp at a designated area in Ingham. After lunch we headed west to check out Wallaman Falls. The windy asend is 530 meters to the top. The view from the top is spectacular. Wllaman falls is the largest single drop water fall in the southern hemisphere. We decided to pack a back pack and hike the 2km down very steep terrain to the bottom. The kids did really well to make it down. We were all rewarded for our efforts with fantastic views and a swim in the rock pools. Now the only issue was going to be the hike back up the mountain. Charlie was a trooper and marched up the steep, rocky single goat track right behind me. Flick and Mack struggled a bit but was encouraged by Mandy at the rear to keep pushing on to the sound of music on her Iphone. Everyone did really well. We headed back to Ingham around 5:30pm. We stopped at a local sea food business and brought delicious fish and chips for dinner.
A quick shower after dinner and all in bed and asleep very quickly tonight.
