Well we certainly slept well after our 21 hour journey. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh airport to immediately get ripped off by the first taxi driver we used. He charged us the equivalent of £20 each for a 20 minute taxi ride. Needless to say we were slightly mift, but didn't think it worth the risk of arguing so we paid and checked into our hostel at around 2am local time.
We eventually decided to get up and explore Ho Chi Minh at around midday, and stopped at the first cafe we came across to have a drink, people watch and watch the POURING DOWN RAIN!!! It's literally poured down all day, but luckily we came equipped with raincoats so the rain didn't stop us. The temperature is a nice change though; despite the rain it's still very warm.
We headed to Ben Thanh Market which is a HUGE indoor market that literally sells everything. We indulged in some new (dark coloured) footwear that will look less grubby after walking through the water-logged streets, and had a delicious Vietnamese meal for about £4 each (see attached photo and the minuscule kiddies table they set up for us teehee). The locals are very friendly and chatty, especially when they think you're going to purchase something! We wandered around a bit more and found a 'Garden Cafe' at the top of a building that had nice views, so we sat and had a drink and watched the crazy traffic on the streets below. The traffic is nuts here. Even when there's a green man at the pedestrian crossings there's a sea of mopeds that continues flowing past so we've learnt that you just have to confidently walk and the traffic will stop/go around you.
We found the extravagant post office building and the Notre Damn Cathedral (that we couldn't go in because visiting hours had ended) and then headed back to the hostel.
We're now deliberating what to do tomorrow, as the original plan was to book a day tour to the Mekong Delta, but the weather is so utterly pants that we don't quite fancy spending a day on a boat in this rain. In fact, the guy that works in our hostel has just informed us that there's a typhoon expected in Hoi An and Nha Trang that we're spending 3 days at each... flipping great!! If we return home 2 stone heavier it's because the weather has forced us to spend 2 weeks eating and drinking... it's not our fault!!
If you could all cross your fingers that we get at least SOME sun during our time here that would be great!

Mum All fingers and toes duly crossed. But looking at the photos, you do seem to be on top of the world rain or no! I'm sure you will have a great time together even if you have to alter your plans. Lots of love xxxxx
Arnie Kath Great photos, Jess, and thanks for the update. Glad you got there safe.....and that you took raincoats! (more than I did when I went to Greece last year and they got hit by the worst storms in living memory!) Hoping the rain lets up, but you'll have a great time exploring (and eating!) either way! Much love xxx
Dad Blimey, the weather sounds just like Cardiff. You must feel really at home. I do hope it picks up a bit for you - perhaps after a typhoon or two, the blowey, wet weather will have spent itself, and you'll be able to get out and do Christmassy things like frolic on beaches. Still, you've managed to produce some great photos, even if they have for some inexplicable reason displayed upside down in my browser (have been standing on my head to view them, but it was worth it!). And, as for the enforced eating, at least you can diet in the New Year. Much love, Dad
