We arrived at Airlie Beach... To rain! It was a really nice area, so it was a shame we didn't get to spend more time there. We stayed here for a night as it is considered the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, and we were spending 3 days at the Whitsundays.
Our boat left the next morning, taking us to Whitehaven beach - the longest beach there, but sadly we had to sit on the beach in the rain! Not a good start. The next place the boat took us to was Hamilton Island, where we had a lovely lunch, and sat outside undercover watching the rain, then popped into an art gallery and a few shops then to a cafe for a hot chocolate (we're not meant to have hot chocolate weather in Oz, surely?!)
The boat then took us to Long Island, where we would spend the next two nights. We had a few drinks in the bar and listened to some terrible kareoke.
The resort was amazing. There was a pool (with swim up bar), it was right on the beach, and had loads of activities like table tennis, kayaking, paddle boarding, tennis, and a few bush walk tracks that take you to different bays/beaches. For a couple of days... We were Flashpackers!
We didn't have great weather during our first full day here, but the sun did come out a bit in the afternoon so we managed a bit of a sunbathe and swim. At 4:45pm everyday they have bird feedings which involve holding a mixture of apple and honey in your hands and having cockatoos land all over you to nibble it. It was such a cool experience! They were very gentle, and very pretty. We treated ourselves to a proper meal in the bar in the evening then were early to bed to make the most of our final day there.
We started the day off with some free kayaking, then I gave paddle boarding a go and managed to wangle a free ride on a jetski, then we went and did the bush walk to Palm Bay and laid on the beach for a couple hours. Lowri went back early as she didn't feel great, and I was the only person left on this secluded beach! It was quite surreal!
We had an hour by the pool and soaked in the hot tub for a while, then it was time to get the ferry back to hostel life at Airlie Beach. Even with the bad weather, I loved our time at the Whitsundays.

Mum Shame the weather isn't being as kind to you as it could be but it seems to be topsy turvy all over. We had an incredible thunderstorm and torrential rain on Wednesday morning in Cardiff. When does it thunder in the morning? Even in KL it waits till the afternoon to thunder. You still seem to be having an incredible time.
loula Jess it sounds amazing. You will never want to come home!!!! X x
Pat Ibbetson Thanks for ending the wait Jess. I am nearly as bad as your Mum checking the blog. Sounds great, pity the weather isn't too good. I'm off to Cardiff tomorrow, will miss you so much. Love A.Pat
Auntie Chris Hi Jess, Uncle Dave was hovering over the computer like a mantling bird so it was great to have another blog from you - it all sounds so great. Glad you have decided to stay on a bit longer - this is such a once in a lifetime opportnity so grab it all with both hands. Auntie Pat has now arrived in Cardiff and Unc. Dave met her. We are all going to Unc. Glyn and Aunty Marylins tomorrow because Wendy will also be down. We look forward v. much to your next blog. In the meantime keep having a great time - you WILL. Love A. Chris and Unc. Dave x
Dad Apart from the weather, it sounds as if you are having a brilliant time, Jess. And managing to pack so much in. I'd never heard of the Whitsundays before. Thinking ahead to Thailand, I've just been reading that there's been a steady upsurge in islamic jihadist activity there, with a new wave of bombings. Be careful over your choice of destinations!
