So after we left Fiordland and the south and west of the south island, it was more or less time to go. We had three days left, and a hefty drive ahead of us before we reached our final destination of Christchurch and the flight to Sydney. Regina, the navigator, had decided that we take the inland road and make one stop because it "looked" shorted. Bless her! I took another look and decided we should take the coast road, which "was" shorter and had better stops on it. The first of these was Dunedin.... home of the best kept Eduardian city in the southern hemisphere, two colonies of Penguins, and of course most importantly a Cadburys chocolate factory (that does tours).
When we arrived first, we had planned to have an evening walking around the town and then go see the penguins. Unfortunately the penguins are kind of picky about when they come ashore so it didnt really suit us to do it that day, and since we were leaving first thing in the morning it wasnt really going to work out at all. As with the best laid plans, they tend to get changed, so we took a walk around town, and low and behold we found ourselves standing in front of the Cadburys factory..... the map hanging out the back of Reginas pockets and her tongue slurping around her mouth like a crazed animal (i am joking of course). Anyway, the factory tour was closed because the factory was closed so after a quick trip to the factory shop we went on the shortened tour of the facility. We were told all about how the factory started up, and how they make chocolate..... can we remember????? They start the tour with a bag of chocolates each and a video..... then the tour guide hands out sweets along the tour..... then we go see the 1 tonne chocolate fountain. Some of it splashed out and landed on the side of my mouth, and of course someone very nicely offered to wipe it off and then eat it, thank you honey!!!! It was quite impressive, they recycle the chocolate for a year (they told us this after she had eaten it of course). The smell, I can only imagine, to a girl would be on par with a dog or bear smelling its way into a steak house (or something along those lines, epic in other words).
The town itself, all though it was massively hiped up in a newspaper I had read two towns back.... was well, nice! Just nice, it had some nice churches and town houses and things, but it wasnt exactly specatular. Christchurch turned out to be a way nicer example, and it had been rocked by some heavy earthquakes dont forget. Before we left, we decided we would head out to where the penguins should have been, just in case. It is out on the Otago penisula, which is topped off by Harrington Point (yes I got the photo this time). We didnt see any penguins, but took a bit of a stroll around and it was quite nice. Then back into the car and off we went for Oamaru our second last stop, and home of yet another pair of penguin colonies....
