So, the short drive down the coast continued and next stop along the Grand Pacific Highway was the little town of Narooma. Its probably fair to say that anyone who has been along the coast from Sydney to Melbourne to do the Great Ocean road may only have passed through these towns. The decision to go to all of them was based on the floods and having more time than we needed to stay everywhere. Thankfully for us, in particular in this town and the next, the extra few days we had lying around turned out to be great. Narooma is a beautiful little town. As you arrive into the town there is a brilliant blue lagoon running under a bridge over to the town. Out to the right is the ocean and inwards is a river. There is a man made something or other (cant think what it would be called but like a lagoon), where all the water is quite shallow and it probably acts as some sort of tide over spill or something, but it glistened like shiney things in the evening sun. The river bends around this and the lagoon and out to sea in a weird kind of loop that makes it really fast current.... really fast!!! Over by the lagoon type thing there is a boardwalk out over the water and there was loads of fish and Sting Ray just swimming around carefree. There was a Seal floating over where the local fishermen prepare their bait, he was just floating on his back watching us watching him.... we were probably more interesting looking than he was!!! Over the wall of the lagoon they had built a big swimming area just out of reach of the
waves, protected by a wall, and on the other side of that wall was the surf beach with massive waves. Down from the waters edge the town raises up along a hill with water either side with the river being kind of lake like on one side. It was really really really nice looking litte town
The hostel was a YHA, and the woman who owns it was really helpful. She spent a very well rehearsed ten minutes with a map telling us all the best places to go.... and she was right about all of them. They were deadly. This has been my favourite place outside of Sydney so far. Down near the beach there is a cliff area
with lots of rock formations and one of them is called Australia Rock. You should see in the pictures why. It is in the shape of Australia!!! Its a bit uncanny really, we even managed to get the map out to prove it to ourselves... Regina was brave enough to climb up for the photos, not me!!!! Down the other end of the beach there were lots more rock formations along the beach and out in the water. I think I must have taken about another 300 photos on the two walks we took down there, it was amazing.... I couldnt stop myself. We were greeted by two eagles flying over us down on that beach too.
The higlight of Narooma, and in a way of the whole Australia adventure so foar has to have been the first time someone said G'Day to us. It was really a special moment, and thankfully it happened along the beautiful boardwalk aswell. I was suprised it had taken so many days to happen, and nearly died with happyiness when it did happen.... since then it has happened quite a bit more, but not much, so it is still special!!!
Anyway, I think that is it for this town. If anyone is ever driving from Sydney to Melbourne I highly recommend at least a day here. It isnt too far from Sydney so unless you wanted to drive the whole journey in one shot it would probably be as good a place as any to stop. Next stop is Merimbula, which Regina would recommend as the place to stop, and they are not far from each other either.... find out next...
