Colleen & Tom's Explorations
We went downstairs for our free breakfast - the cooked food looked awful. None of it looked appetising at all. I tried a dried up sausage and 2 bacon rashers cooked till even the devil left them alone. I resorted to two pieces of toast with peanut butter and strawberry jam (and they'd hidden them up with the fruit - not next to the bread as they were yesterday). They charged us the same as yesterday - so we had been charged for a full cooked breakfast - but then put a big red cross through it. I guess they present that to the hotel to pay. One man later asked for some scrambled eggs because there were none left, and when they said they would make some for him he said he didn't have time to wait - they didn't have any ready to put out. Very. Poorly. Run. We returned to our room and finished packing and we're down in the lobby in time for our shuttle pickup. Last night I'd rung the shuttle people who brought us from the railway and asked them to collect us this morning. We were shocked when a Frenchman turned up in a Lincoln town car limousine! It turns out he's the owner of the shuttle service. He was highly informative on our trip to the airport and he enjoyed asking us questions about America. He was shocked at how much we knew (really simple stuff like largest states, fauna etc). He said they did a survey and the average American doesn't even realise where the first white settlers came from, and who they had a war with to gain their independence. He said the fact that they speak English doesn't even give them a clue. I told him about the mozzarella cows. He thought that was hilarious. And sad. He charged us the same rate as if we were in a shuttle bus with other passengers! So. At the beginning of the "holiday travel rush" we arrived at Orlando airport. We lined up for half an hour and checked in our luggage - flying Jet Blue - and made our way to security, a huge writhing mass of people slowly funnelled through the checkpoints. One of the people wrangling all the passengers looked at our boarding pass and told us we'd been TSA pre approved (which is a thing you have to pre-apply for - we don't know if it's a result of our visa-waiver, Tom's Pentagon screening or just because the little checkin man liked us). That meant we went to a line that only took five minutes. No need to take off shoes and belts, or to empty electronics out of bags. Express!! Then slowly up to the departure lounge. By this time my knees were killing me. We were boarded early with the wheelchair passengers. I really like Jet Blue. Only one class on the plane, all leather seats. They gave us free snacks and soft drinks (lunch). When we arrived in Washington, we were just organising ourselves when a man came along and asked us if I'd like a wheelchair - he said it was a long way to baggage claim and we thought "yes!!" It was wonderful! He knew where he was going, and that made it so much easier. Tom collected our bags, we wandered outside and got a taxi to our hotel. The taxi driver said he was originally from Eastern Africa. So, we checked in, refreshed ourselves and Tom took off to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, returning about 5.30pm with some food from that Scottish restaurant who's clan he descends from! Yes, we are covering all levels of food service on this trip. We then set off for the Navy Memorial where we picked up our night tour of Washington. There was just us and a family of five from Florida, with the minibus driver and tour guide. There followed a picturesque tour of the memorials, visiting the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol, the Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, WWII memorial, Washington Monument and the White House South Lawn. We also saw the Kennedy Centre, the building where the Secretary of State works, and so many more. Every building we passed seemed to be commented on - the IRS, the National Archives, the Treasury. Etc etc. we had to be careful of the black ice on the ground in some places. It was quite cold. Our bus driver was really interesting to talk to - he's from Khartoum in Sudan and has been here since 1995. They dropped us back at our hotel at about 11pm. Another long day Oh, I forgot to mention - we saw a chipmunk at NASA yesterday!
