Colleen & Tom's Explorations
After our Scottish breakfast we ventured downstairs and got a taxi over to L'Enfant Plaza (named for Pierre L'Enfant, the Frenchman who designed Washington) where I joined my Washington Grand Tour group, consisting of three other people. Tom went off to find the metro to get to the Pentagon. My tour initially visited all the memorials we saw the other night, but also included the James Smithson castle (the original Smithsonian); the American Native Museum (which has no corners, in line with their beliefs); the White House, which is on 5 acres and has 132 rooms and 38 bathrooms ( George Washington never lived here, he lived in Mt Vermont, John Adams was the first to live in the White House. We also saw the African American Museum which was constructed in the shape of an African Queen's crown; the lock keepers cottage dating back to when Constitution Avenue was a canal; the Octagon Museum (architect's museum); the Constitutional Gardens where the Declaration of Independence was signed; the Tidal Basin which is 10feet deep and surrounded by Japanese flowering cherries, a gift from Japan in 1912; and the Pentagon, the workplace for 250,000 people. The driver dropped us off at the Pentagon shopping centre, entering through Macy's (and walking past the earring section) where I found a Starbucks and had lunch. After our lunch break we continued on to Arlington Cemetery. This started out as the mansion belonging to Robert E Lee, but when he changed sides during the civil war, they decided to bury some of his enemies in his front yard before he returned home. This ensured that he wouldn't live there any longer. It was a long walk to get into Arlington, go through security, buy the trolley bus ticket and then walk up to get the trolley bus, to then be told that Arlington House and JFK's grave were off the trolley tour itinerary for this afternoon due to funerals being held in their vicinity. Erghhhhhh. They were the two things I was particularly interested in! You could walk to see them, but my knees aren't up for that! After Arlington we went to look at the Iwo Jima Memorial, and then our driver delivered us to our respective hotels. Tom returned to our hotel after 4pm. He'd been to the Pentagon, to the Spy Museum and back to the Air and Space. We decided to have dinner downstairs in the bar and grill before returning to our room to pack up.
