Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Well, today is the first day with no plans, but washing, in over a month. And there was much rejoicing! And the weather man knew, because he made it rain today. The hostel was so quiet when we awoke around 7, we thought we were the only ones here, but when we went downstairs it was bustling with people and foreign languages. After breakfast we got some change from reception and they gave us the washing detergent and we went down to the laundry in the basement. Someone else had the same idea and had already nabbed one of the two Miele machines, but that's okay. Musings: have LOVED the youth hostels in Switzerland. Don't know if I'd use them anywhere else though - not certain they'd be as efficient/clean as the Swiss ones. We don't think anyone went near our room during the day at Geneva, but here in Zurich they've emptied our bin every day, and washed the handbasin (moving our soap in the process). And one day we came back to a brand new shower curtain! There was no alcohol allowed in Geneva. Zermatt and St Moritz sold it with the meals, Zurich has its own bar! The transport systems in Geneva and Zurich have been BRILLIANT. Geneva's, however, was free. It cost us 5.20 francs/day in Zurich. In Zermatt and St Moritz we relied on taxis - very expensive! So we are somewhat subdued tonight. This whole trip was planned around a stay in France, but we don't want to leave Switzerland! Biggest export for Switzerland is coffee (Nestlé, Nescafé, Nespresso), Red Bull (and my loyal blog readers will know that that's produced in Austria, but apparently it's canned in Switzerland), and then chocolate (or was it watches?). Everything has gone very smoothly and according to plan - all of our bookings made on the Internet all those months ago, have all worked out - the tours and the accommodation. Tom got sick of counting the Porsches in Zurich - very common cars.
