Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Oh we do love Switzerland! Everything here is so efficient and so well-organised! The trains, the trams, the buses..... It's all just beautiful. So this morning we took our time, had a leisurely breakfast in the cafe next door, trundled across the road (we do love these new spinner suitcases - they take all of the work out of lugging the suitcases - and we do love Swiss railways with their working escalators and elevators). We bid "au revoir" to Evian (as in the water) across the other side of the lake, as well as to the French speaking part of Switzerland. We noticed on our train journey that the announcements changed from French to German. The journey today was incredibly picturesque - passing by so many waterfalls, cascading meltwater, and through tunnels. To begin with we were travelling through a typical glacial U-shaped valley with lots of apple orchards. Their apple trees are espaliered so they receive maximum sunshine and they are easier to harvest. It was like this all the way to Visp, but after we changed trains the landscape changed. Our engine had a cog-wheel and the track had the extra cog-track in the middle for the steep inclines. I had thought Zermatt might be on the valley floor, but it's quite high up in the mountains. Our train journey took just over two and a half hours. When we reached Zermatt we found that the railway station has a room where you can leave your luggage. It was just after 1pm and the youth hostel is unmanned until 4pm so we left our suitcases and explored Zermatt by foot. There are no cars here, they have little electric buses and taxis. It is lovely. We had some spinach quiche for lunch, and some gluewein. We had planned to go up to Glacier Paradise, but it was cloudy and rainy, so decided to stay down in the village. The Matterhorn is shrouded in clouds - maybe we'll see it tomorrow? We haven't come here specially for it, we've come for tomorrow's train journey. So we retrieved our luggage just before four and got a little electric taxi up to the youth hostel. We have an awesome room with double aspect looking out onto the mountain and the village, and the towels, while half the size of last night's, they are double the size of those in Geneva! Dinner and breakfast are both included in our tariff here at Zermatt. We had a nice soup, spaghetti with marinara or tomato pasta sauce, with side salad, followed by apple strudel. There is no wifi in our room, only in the public area of our hostel :(.
