Colleen & Tom's Explorations
So - breakfast in the youth hostel ...... Took us back to when we first met in uni accommodation in 1975!!! Holding our trays, collecting our food and then eating in a full and bustling dining hall. But I don't think we're in an ordinary youth hostel - last night I met a man in the elevator - Freddie, from Namibia. He said he was here till Friday for the UN. I thought "yeah sure". But at brekky there were a few tables of very well dressed girls - professional suits, 5" heels, hair pinned up - wouldn't have been out of place in Sydney CBD, and they all knew each other. Maybe they're making a fortune on their accommodation allowances!! So we got ourselves organised and caught the now familiar tram #15 down to the railway station (why didn't we know about this before we arrived?), and the walked to the tour operator's office at the bus terminal. But no, this morning's Geneva tour has been cancelled, we can join the 1.30pm tour. So we sat and collected our thoughts and considered our options. Tom had some newspaper clippings and photocopies of things he wanted to see and do, so we consulted the transport map and went and caught the #1 bus. This took us across the Rhone River to the other side of the city. There was a museum called Musee D'Horlogerie - museum of Swiss clocks and watches - and we got off at the right stop but couldn't find it anywhere. We came across an interesting statue that I thought looked like a watch mechanism and Tom took a photo of it, but then gave up and went into the adjacent Museum of Natural History. They told us that the other museum had been just next door but was now closed. After checking out this museum we caught the bus back into town and continued along the shore of Lake Geneva to its terminus, and then back into town again. We went to the department store that Tom had read about. They have a licensed self-serve cafeteria on the 4th floor where we each got a lovely chicken schnitzel with a plate full of veggies - broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, eggplant, zucchini, potatoes and peas. Just what we needed. After lunch we caught the bus back down to the terminal and boarded the coach for our tour of Geneva starting with the United Nations Geneva offices and those of other worldwide organisations: Red Cross, UNICEF etc. We then continued along the lakeside and across the Rhone to the old part of town where they put us into a little trolley car that could fit in narrow, cobblestone streets. After touring this area we returned to the bus terminal and caught the #1 bus and #15 tram back to the hostel - time for a nap and washing! Ha - I can't catch a bus in Sydney, but put me in Geneva with a transport map and we're all over it! We're finding that it's quite warm and humid over here. I only packed a couple of summer tops and they're getting a lot of use. Perhaps we'll wear our winter gear more as we get into the alps. I hope so - they use up a lot of suitcase space! And dinner? Takeaway pizza on our balcony watching the yachts on the lake.

Shannon Had a little chuckle when I read your museum of clocks was closed down, perhaps Dad's newspaper clipping was from a few too many years ago....hehehe. Glad you've topped up your veggie intake! I remember how much I missed vegetables in Europe. xx
Colleen Watt Thought you could relate to all of that! ;)
