Colleen & Tom's Explorations
An electric buggy picked us up and delivered us to the homestead where we had breakfast. We saw the Sydney couple who said the nocturnal tour was wonderful, so we've booked to go on that tonight. Breakfast was a choice of a continental buffet, and/or something ordered fresh from the kitchen. Tom chose eggs Benedict and I had a dish featuring trout and quinoa, accompanied by the usual fresh fruit. The story was recounted to us, by Sophie from Sydney who drove our return buggy, how the sheikh in charge of Emirates was searching for a place to build an environmentally friendly resort and landed his helicopter here in Wolgan Valley and offered the owners $4million, which they accepted! After brekky we returned to our villa where I had a dip in our pool, followed by lounging in a deck chair and Tom went for a walk around some of the resort, but not the whole 7000 acres! When he returned we both went swimming, followed by showers, change of clothes and then ready for lunch!! Lunch was in the downstairs part of the homestead - very nice. We found that the helicopter which arrived earlier was carrying various departmental Chiefs of Emirates and One and Only. It seems Emirates were "encouraged" to do something for our communities in exchange for landing privileges at Sydney, hence the search for and establishment of Wolgan valley. After lunch we did the tour of the old original homestead that was built in 1832. Emirates could have had it demolished, or they could pay $4million to have it preserved, which is what they did! We also saw the tree that has wedding ceremonies conducted under it, including Hamish (from Hamish and Andy), and Michael Clarke. We walked around the veggie patch which is also used by the kitchens for the restaurant food. After the tour of the old homestead we napped and then prepared for our evening tour, spotlighting nocturnal animals from the safari truck. We saw many many wallaroos and kangaroos and wombats. Unfortunately no owls or platypuses. We returned from our evening's activities in time for a leisurely dinner. Each evening we retire to our bed like a couple of pythons who've eaten six chickens each!
