Colleen & Tom's Explorations
So...... This morning we packed! The girls and their husbands/partners had given us a voucher for a regional long lunch at Hartley Valley so we left home at about 11.30am and headed out in heavy traffic. Ambermere Rose Inn is a former Cobb & Co Coach Inn and does meals specialising in food and matched wines from the local area. We started off with a large tasting platter full of cheeses, olives, bread, chorizo, ham, dried Muscat grapes, serve with sparkling wine. Tom then had a Moroccan goat dish with a Shiraz, while I had lamb shanks with a delicious cab sav that was not as heavy as we've experience because it came from the cooler climate of Orange. We both chose pavlova for dessert, which was served with an ice-wein. This as followed by a latte with biscotti. Just a delightful meal, in a wonderful old inn! We then continued on our way to Wolgan Valley, dropping down into the hidden valley surrounded by stunning cliffs, glowing in the afternoon sun. At the entrance to the resort we were met at a security gate where a man checked our names with the guest list and pointed out our car park, from where we would be met by a porter. And indeed we were. A porter in a land rover to take us through the valley and across the creek to reception at the homestead. We entered the reception area and were taken straight to the lounge where we accepted the sparkling wine offered to us, and the cool damp towels to refresh ourselves. After completing the paper work we were left to finish our drinks, although Tom wandered out onto the verandah and befriended a lovely Muslim couple from Sydney who are here for just one night to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The lady with the sparkling wine kept returning and topping up our drinks. After quite some time we returned indoors and a lovely man took us out to an electric golf-buggy and then conveyed us to our villa and showed us around the amenities available. It is just wonderful. The attached pool has concertina windows that open all the way around. The shower has a glass roof to see the stars. The walk-in robe is gigantic. The bed is so high there's a little box in the wardrobe to assist in climbing in. The bed is covered with seven pillows, and there is a pillow menu if these are not to our liking. The mini bar is free, except for the Whisky, vodka and Moët. There is a Nescafé coffee machine (but George Clooney is not here). The screened porch has rocking chairs. Hmmmm - bliss!! So we freshened up, changed our clothes and called reception to get a little buggy to take us up to the homestead for dinner. Dinner was just wonderful - 3 courses with accompanying wines, including dessert wines.
