Colleen & Tom's Explorations
We took it easy this morning, running on no-one's timetable but our own. After brekky we caught the JR Yamanote line to Shimbashi where we alighted, walked across the road to a different, private railway - the Yurikamome line, where we caught a driverless train to the Telecom Centre out on one of the man-made islands. From there we walked into Tokyo's Academic Park to the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. I then installed myself in the cafe while Tom immersed himself in all the wondrous things he could find. After quite some time we wandered down the street to the Museum of Maritime Science, but unfortunately they are refurbishing it, so we retraced our steps and went back on to the driverless train back to Shimbashi. The Yamanote line does a circle of Tokyo that takes an hour, so we stayed on it until we got to Tokyo a second time. We thought being a Saturday afternoon it might be quiet, but I don't think there are ever any quiet times in Tokyo. After we got off we found a basement in the station with lots of eateries - Tom had fried noodles with pork and veggies, with beer. I had fried rice with seafood, and a beer. Nothing about my meal was what I wanted - I pointed to the fried noodles with seafood, but the girl insisted on asking a question that I couldn't understand, so I went with my second choice which she seemed quite amenable to. I also asked for sake, but she asked more questions that couldn't be answered, so I chose the beer. I was really surprised, I would've thought a language problem would be encountered in far off Osaka, or little Kyoto, not big metropolis Tokyo. Oh well, I didn't starve. Things I appreciated today: the total, unexpected quiet of our hotel room. The "foot light" switch in our room - it turns on lights under our bedside table and our chest of drawers, so if you wake in the night you can see where you are The public toilets have a little high chair type of thing in the corner of the cubicle, so you can put your baby somewhere while you go to the toilet.
