Colleen & Tom's Explorations
After brekkie we head out to the bus stop where we were collected and taken to the bus station, given our tickets and sent off to Mount Fuji, along with 3 other buses do tourists. Not long after we got out of Tokyo it started raining, and as we got closer to Mt Fuji the rain turned to sleet, slush and finally snow. Our first stop was to be Mt Fuji, but the road blocks were up - no-one was allowed up the road, so then we headed off for the lake cruise. The narrow roads were covered in snow, and we were behind some slow moving traffic, so we got there too late for that particular cruise, so we made a stop at Lake Kawaguchiko where we took photos of ducks on a lake in the snow. After that we continued on our way to the Highland Resort at Fujiyoshida - Shinnishihara where we had a lovely Japanese lunch. We then continued on to Hakone Komagatake where we caught the cable car up to the top of Mt Komagatake, but due to the snow blowing everywhere,we couldn't see a thing. After returning to the base station, we walked, in the snow, down to Lake Ashi, where we boarded a boat which took us to the other side of this crater lake. The lake never freezes over because the temperature of the water never goes below 4 degrees. The snow had been coming down all day and as we were leaving the mountain many cars were getting stuck, or finding their car could not continue ascending and having to back down instead. Buses were stopped on the narrow road while they put their snow chains on. It was chaotic. We were very lucky, although it took us a long time to get out - so long in fact our driver had to have a break after 2 hours of driving (by law), which I gather doesn't usually happen. Our guide told us that the other 3 buses had become stuck in the chaos of the snow, but then the snow ploughs were called in. We were eventually dropped off in the rain in Ginza, where we managed to grab some chicken for dinner, and bought some bakery delights to take back to our room for dessert. We walked back then to the Yurakucho station where we were able to get a train back to Tokyo on the Yamanote line. We returned to our hotel room at 8.15pm, 12 hours after being collected by the tour bus.
