Colleen & Tom's Explorations
First stop on our tour of the city was a trip to see the oldest tree in Buenos Aires - a HUGE Moreton Bay Fig from Australia!! Of course! It was just across the park from the cemetery where Eva Peron is buried, which of course was our next stop! She was really loved by her people. We drove around the Recolleta area, viewing government buildings, embassies and exclusive shopping areas. We saw the "pink palace" where Eva Peron used to appear for her people. She really changed living conditions for the people, especially women. We also saw St Martin's cathedral, where Pope Francis used to be the cardinal, and where the remains of the Saint are entombed and kept under guard. While we were there they did a changing of the guard. We also drove through the Palermo district and stopped at the La Boca district for a wander and lunch. There may have been more souvenir buying. It's interesting - in places the architecture is very Parisian. Our local guide had two good descriptions - "the Mexicans descend from the Aztecs, the Peruvians descend from the Incas and the Argentinians descend from the boats!" She says most people go back to grandparents who moved out here from Europe. She also says that Argentinians are Italians who speak Spanish, dress like the English and pretend to be French! After our time in La Boca we did a guided tour of the opera house - magnificent, ornate building! They've been refurbishing it since 2000. That was the end of the tour so when we returned to,our hotel we thought we'd have a 20 minute nap because tonight we have a late dinner and a tango show - we awoke 2 hours later! Time to explore the local area and people watch at the park before getting ready for the night out. Dinner was lovely and the tango dancing was amazing!
