Today we took a tour of Fraser Island which is off the coast from Hervey Bay. On our way we spotted a number of kangaroo in a field. It was a 40 minute ferry ride to begin the tour. Fraser is the largest sand island in the world at about 75 miles long. It is very unusual because it has 5 Eco systems on the island including a rainforest. The island was formed from sand from Antarctic (before the continent of Australia and Antarctic separated) and is 99% pure. The roads are pure sugar sand so only 4WD/tour vehicles can make it.
The island has beautiful pristine fresh water lakes with the softest white sand. We swam in Lake McKenzie. The water has a pH of 4.5, and was 85 degrees. You could actually feel the softness of the water. I think this spot is at the top of the list for Randy thus far.
We hiked through the rainforest which was beautiful. The creeks which our guide claimed had the cleanest water in the world, filtered by sand. We filled up the water bottle.
Our guide then took us on a pretty wild drive right on the beach. The waves were really rolling in.
There is a great deal of Aboriginal heritage on this island and we heard legends of the history.
The Dingos (wild dogs) were what we were warned about the most. We didn't see any.
Our campsite is right on the beach. The weather was great today, in the 80's and low humidity. We are staying here for 2 nights.
