One of the best weeks of my life. The most grooving drum circle jam sessions happened in Hampi. Sweat pouring, hands blood red, lights dim, energy flowing back and forth, Latin, African, Indian drums, laying the beat through the night.
My visit to Hampi corrolated with the Holi Festival. The festival of color. You are fair game once you step a foot into the streets in the morning.
Out of the corner of my eye, a see 2 wild eyed children make a dash for me. I sprint through the morning sunlight to my friend who is holding a packet of orange and pink powder for me. "Give me the color!!!", I yell. I mix the powder with water to make a brew that will stain and child's school clothes.
I look left and right, tourists and locals have already been doused with color. A motorbike speeds by and we drench the two occupants in a rainbow of color. Then, my friend pours a blue soup all over my back. HOLI HAS BEGUN!
A cavalcade of Indians parade through the streets, children yelling, adults singing and chanting. The energy builds and builds and booming drums fill the tranquil air of Hampi. Colors flying, everyone becomes a devil red color. A few Indian men look possessed because the red powder has filled the whites of their eyes. WOW. It is the most fun I'll ever have on a Monday morning.
India attracts good travelers. I have met so many life long friends in the month I have been here. Writers, musicians and philosophers throughout time have known that this place is something special. They have known that there is something here that cannot be felt. It is beyond thought. it is beyond comprehension. But it is here.
