Today we drove alone the Tasman shoreline which gave us the most scenic drive we've had so far on this trip.
Our main stop today was an hour walk around Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay, which we weren't exactly thrilled about in the morning, until about three-quarters of the way through when we came to a viewing point and saw a huge seal colony!
We spent far too long looking at and commenting on how cute the seals were, to the point we thought our driver might start to get worried!
Our next stop was the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and blowholes which although were quite cool, didn't involve looking at seals, so was a bit of a disappointment compared to the previous walk. We had high standards today.
The last stop of the day was Greymouth where we picked up supplies for our fancy dress party that night. Seeing as we were all on a budget, our driver picked the theme of bin bags, which proved harder to be inventive for than we thought! In the end we went for a standard bin bag dress which we accessorised with streamers and tape. Other people tried a bit harder with their outfits such as all blacks, flies and poo, bin (bag) laden, batman, jellybeans etc.
Once we arrived at Lake Mahinapua we were shocked about how remote it was - even for New Zealand. It was literally a pub in the middle of nowhere that had some hostel rooms attached to it and the lake a 5 minute walk away.
We headed down to the lake but decided it was far too cold for than nonsense and instead enjoyed watching everyone else push each other in. We also had an encounter with some rather sassy local girls who were going to help Matt find his sunglasses until he was rude to them. They were great.
Going back to the hostel we sat down for dinner which was another brilliant - and much needed - roast. Then we started getting ready for the evening before having some pre-drinks in the boys' room, which definitely got a little bit crowded considering it was a tiny room of 6 and we ended up with about 20 people in there.
The drinks were only $5 and kiwi experience were the only people in the pub and hostel, so you can just imagine how the night went…It was definitely one of the most entertaining nights we've had so far!
